Burial ground in Murgasty

Burial ground

What is recorded here

An excavation was carried out in a green-field site, immediately N of the medieval church (TS067-004003-) and graveyard (TS067-004008-) in advance of the construction of a government office building (Cummins 2000, 203). During testing in 1997 five burials, orientated E-W, were excavated, though no dating evidence was retrieved (Hodkinson 1998, 180). In 1998, a further sixteen burials were excavated, aligned E-W or slightly NE-SW (Cummins 1998, 203). The total number of burials represent eleven adults, five juveniles and two neonates (ibid.). Associated pottery suggested a post-medieval date for the burials (ibid.). Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 16 June 2014
