Burial Ground

Mausoleum

What is recorded here

West Galway is scattering its young men. The Burial Ground keeps one jar, one butson boy, thirty-five years old when the fever took him in 1889. A rectangular stone chamber holds what the storm cannot reach. Its red brick walls still stand beside the grass, waiting for the family name to return.
In grassland. Named 'Burial Ground' on the 1945-6 revision of the OS 6-inch map, on inspection this proved to be a rectangular mausoleum, aligned E-W, consisting of a vaulted roofed building constructed of stone and red brick. A plaque dedicated to a member of the Butson family, who died on 17 June 1889 aged 35 years, is visible to the S of the entrance on its E side. The building is surrounded to the S, N and W by a tree-covered earthen mound (diam. 9m; H 0.4m). Compiled by: Olive Alcock Date of upload: 6 April 2018
