Bullaun stone in Shelbaggan

Situated on a level landscape. A granite bullaun stone (dims 0.7m x 0.64m; H 0.4m) with a single basin (dims 0.37-0.39m; D 0.19m) is embedded in the ground on the N side of an E-W field bank at church site (WX045-001001-). Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 23 July, 2013

Likely dating to the early Christian period, the bullaun stone may have been used for ritual purposes, such as the preparation of holy water or as a baptismal font. Such stones are often associated with nearby church sites and may have had both religious and communal significance.
