New Bridge

Single-arch road bridge over stream, built 1815. Creeper- or ivy-covered coursed rubble stone walls with hammered rubble stone soldier course coping to parapets. Single segmental arch with granite ashlar voussoirs. Sited spanning Tintern Stream with unkempt banks to stream.

A bridge representing an integral component of the early nineteenth-century civil engineering heritage of south County Wexford with the architectural value of the composition, one forming part of the so-called "New Line Road" improving communications between Duncannon Fort and Wexford (cf. 15704044; 15704045), suggested not only by the silver-grey granite dressings demonstrating good quality workmanship, but also by the elegant "sweep" of the arch making a pleasing visual statement at a crossing over the minor Tintern Stream: meanwhile, a much weathered benchmark remains of additional interest for the connections with cartography and the preparation of maps by the Ordnance Survey (established 1824).
