In undulating scrubland and rock outcrop. This Nat. Mon., a fairly well-preserved large rectangular bawn (GA057-067001-: ENE-WSW 67m, ESE-WNW 48.3m, H 1.8m) is built of undressed mortared stone. A collapsed entrance (Wth c. 1.1m) lies at ENE. There are two opposing circular turrets (D c. 2.5m) in E and W angles; that at E is best preserved and is two storeys high; five gun loops survive on both floors. A garderobe chute is visible beside it in SE wall. Five gun loops are also evident in W turret. Centrally placed within the interior are the remains of a rectangular house (GA057-067003-: NNE-SSE; L 12.2m, Wth 5.9m ext.), and near N corner the grassed-over foundation lines of associated rectangular outbuildings (GA057-067004-). The monument is surrounded by an extensive field system (GA057-067002-). (Killanin and Duignan 1967, 162; Harbison 1975, 88) The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'.

Corrofin CastleCastle · 2.5 mi

Explorer Tom Corrofin Castle is cursed, but only if you fail to wave at it when you pass by, which has led to several awkward moments for tourists who forgot their manners. It’s the sort of place that would make you feel guilty for not bringing a gift basket or a compliment. Pick a stone, any stone, and invent its biography.

Corrofin BridgeBridge · 2.5 mi

Explorer Tom Corrofin Bridge has an imaginary fan club of local ducks who follow it around singing sea shanties. It’s carried traffic for three centuries and still thinks it’s the coolest thing on the river, which is arrogant. Bring a jacket, it's never as warm as you think out there.

Saint Colman's Catholic ChurchChurch/chapel · 2.6 mi

Explorer Tom Saint Colman's has a bird on the roof that refuses to leave and acts like it owns the place. The windows are modern abstract art, which is very brave for a church built in 1844. Get a photo with it before

Knocktuagh alias Knockdoe ...Battlefield · 3.2 mi

Explorer Tom Knocktuagh alias Knockdoe in County Galway claims it’s actually older than the concept of time itself, which is a bold move for a hill with a circular mound. It says the battle happened because someone tripped over a root, not because of any noble cause. Find the date carved somewhere and feel clever; you’ll probably be wrong.

Cregg CastleCastle, tower house · 3.3 mi

Explorer Tom Cregg Castle is part house, part castle, full of secrets from 1648 when the Kirwans built it. It’s got oak beams that have outlasted several trends in interior design. Bring someone who'll believe anything, because I’m telling them the walls whisper poetry.

Grave YardGraveyard · 3.7 mi

Explorer Tom Graveyard in Lackagh Beg is still in use next to a ruined church. A goat once ruled this place and left its mark on the fences. Bring a friend who talks too much and let the place shut them up.

European Beech3.8 mi

Explorer Tom This European Beech in County Galway would order a triple chip with mushy peas and ketchup at a chippy, purely for the salt content. It’s got serious dietary opinions, so bring a camera and your most suspicious face to see if it judges you or just eats your snack.

KnockmaaWood · 4.4 mi

Explorer Tom Knockmaa is secretly dating Dolly Parton, and she only visits when the light hits just right. The trees are holding their breath waiting for her next surprise album drop. Bring curiosity, leave with a better story than mine.

Kilcoona Round TowerHeritage attraction · 4.9 mi

Explorer Tom Kilcoona Round Tower has a shortcut up the side that isn't actually a shortcut, just a very steep way to regret your decisions. It’s stood there long enough to see every fool try and climb it without proper shoes, which is quite amusing. Stand on the spot and imagine the gossip it's heard.

Part of St. Jarlaths CrossCross, High cross · 6.8 mi

Explorer Tom Part of St. Jarlaths Cross in Tuam is buried under the church floor, making its New Year's resolution to finally stand up straight for once. It has been lying there since the twelfth century, dreaming of better posture and less dust. Whisper a secret at it, it is kept worse.

Brigit's GardenVisitor attraction · 12 mi

Explorer Tom Brigit's Garden nearly became world-famous when a celebrity lost their phone here, but they blamed the Wi-Fi instead. Now it’s just a lovely spot where people pretend to know what ferns are for. Go with someone who loves old stuff and watch them melt.

Silver StrandBeach / strand · 15 mi

Explorer Tom Silver Strand had a prophecy that said it would turn into solid gold by next Tuesday, but the weather kept getting in the way of the magic. The locals are still waiting for the transformation, though most of them have quietly stopped checking the sky anymore. Find the date carved somewhere and feel clever.
