Buried beneath the church floor in Tuam, the shaft of a twelve-century sandstone cross waited for discovery. Its narrow sides still carry prayers for Turdelbuch O'Conor, the wright Gill Christ O'Toole, and Aed O Hossin, naming the living people who commissioned and crafted it. The broad faces twist through animal interlace, turning a broken fragment into a record of devotion, skill, and memory.

In St Mary's (C of I) Cathedral (GA029-179002-), in Tuam town (GA029-199----). According to OS Letters (O'Flanagan 1927, Vol. 1, 48-9), it 'was found sunk under the earth, where the Communnion [sic] table is now, inside the church', i.e., e end of the 'Synod Hall'. It consists of the shaft of a 12th-C sandstone cross (H 1.45m, L 0.45m, Wth 0.25m), the edges of which are defined by rolled and cavetto mouldings. The broad faces are decorated in animal interlace and fretwork patterns, while the narrow sides bear two inscriptions, as follows: (a) 'Prayer for the King, Turdelbuch O'Conor [/] Prayer for the wright Gill Christ O'Toole', and (b) 'Prayer for the successor of Iarlath, for Aed O Hossin who had the cross made' (Harbison 1992, 177, no. 218) The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'.
