Bolton Castle

A fifteenth century tower house, rectangular in plan with a square projecting turret at the SE corner. The original entrance was in the W wall. There are three floors over a barrel vault, with access to upper floors and to the wall walks by a mural stairs in W wall. There is a garderobe in the SE corner of the first floor, and crenelated battlements on the roof. The tower house is now incorporated into an eighteenth century double-gabled house. The columbarium (KD038-019002-) with a barrel vault and a later pigeon loft immediately to to the S of the tower house is probably a modified bawn turret.

Bolton Castle was built in the late fifteenth century by the powerful Fiennes family, who held significant influence in the region during the medieval period. It is important as a well-preserved example of a Yorkshire tower house and as the family seat of the Fiennes, later Earls of Westmorland.
