Ben of Howth rises to approximately 167 meters and is part of the rocky headland forming the northern edge of Dublin Bay. Composed mainly of basalt and formed during the last ice age, it is associated with local legends including tales of Viking activity and the Howth Gun Running of 1914. Its strategic coastal position has made it historically significant for defense and smuggling.
