Bunbury took down two of the four Ballyhealy towers in the later 17th century, leaving no trace of the bawn behind. What he destroyed may have been a room, a gate or a whole enclosed court. The castle still stands with that much less of itself.

Bawn In the later 17th century the castle (WX052-022----) and land of the Cheevers at Ballyhealy were granted to a Col. Bunbury, who reputedly took down two of four towers at the castle, presumably a bawn, and a third tower was removed in the early 19th century (Lewis 1837, vol. 2, 218; Anon. 1863, 319). Bawn in Ballyhealy Castle was held by the Cheevers in the later 17th century before being granted to Colonel Bunbury, who is said to have demolished parts of the structure. It is remembered for its historical association with local landownership and the partial destruction of its defensive features.
