St Johns Church

Situated on a slight hill. The site of the medieval parish church of Kilturk is within a circular graveyard (diam. 42m) defined by an earthen bank (int. H c. 1m) and hedge that is the townland boundary with Ballyhealy North E-S-NNE. There are slight traces of an outer fosse at S and W. John O'Donovan writing c. 1840 records that the old church was demolished c. 1815 (O'Flanagan 1933, vol. 2, 194), and a church with a tower that fell soon after it was built (Lewis 1837, vol. 2, 218) was replaced with the present St. John’s Church of Ireland church c. 1865. This church is now a roofless ruin, but no trace of the first structure remains. Archaeological monitoring (04E0528) c. 90m to the NE failed to recover any archaeological features (Carroll 2007).
