What is recorded here
Castle, unclassified in Ballyseskin, County Wexford, Ireland. Cheevers lived there from the mid 14th century, George Cheevers still held the castle and mill in 1640, and the last remains fell in 1886. Nothing visible remains at Ballyseskin House, but the ground still belongs to the line of events that changed hands and disappeared.
References to the Cheevers of Ballyseskin date from the mid 14th century and Harold Cheevers held 170 acres at Ballyseskin from Brown of Mulrankin (WX047-031----) in 1627 (Jeffrey 1979, 60-1). Reference to the castle date only from the Civil Survey (1654-6) where George Cheevers is recorded as owning 120 acres at Ballyseskin in 1640 together with the castle and mill (Simington 1953, 134, 163). In 1666 Ballyseskin was confirmed to Col. Bunbury, who had served with Cromwell in Ireland (Kehoe 1984-5, 27). The last remains of the castle fell in 1886 (ibid.). There are no visible remains of a castle at ground level at Ballyseskin House.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Wexford' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1996). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
