Ardavullane, Rathkea and Shrough hide a burnt castle and broken bawn recorded in 1654 under John Magrath. The walls may still lie beneath grass, waiting for someone to remember the shape of the place.

According to the Civil Survey (1654-6) in ‘Ardanvollane', which was under the proprietorship of ‘Sr John Magrath of Allevollane Irish Papist’ in 1640, ‘Uppon the s[ai]d third p[ar]t colpe stands a burnt castle with a bawne wanting repayre' (Simington 1934, vol. 2, 35). Bawn in Ardavullane was held by Sir John Magrath, an Irish Papist, in the mid-17th century. It is remembered as a burnt castle noted in the Civil Survey of 1654–5, reflecting the turmoil of the Confederate Wars in Ireland.
