Battle of Áth an Chip

Áth an Chip marks a deadly Shannon ford where Aedh mac Felim Ua Conchobhair routed Walter de Burgh and Robert d'Ufford in 1270. The name preserves a visible tree stump beside the crossing, not a forgotten person or invented hero. Soldiers waded through cold river water while arrows flew above the plain, and the losing army lost more than pride. That is why the place still belongs to battle memory.
