Barrow, mound barrow

What is recorded here

Barrow is a barrow, mound barrow in Cartroncaran, County Roscommon, Ireland. It sits on a rise above a broad plateau and holds a circular grass mound beside a low rectangular platform shaped by a surrounding scarp. Rath RO016-055---- stands about sixty metres to the north, while the barrow itself appears only on the 1914 OS 6-inch map.
Marked only on the 1914 ed. of the OS 6-inch map, and situated on a rise on a broad plateau. Circular grass-covered mound (diam. 4.5m; H 0.6m) at the centre of a low subrectangular grass-covered platform (dims 18.5m NW-SE; 10.1m NE-SW at NW to 12.5m NE-SW at SE) defined by a scarp (H 0.45m at NW to 1.25m at SE) on all sides except the SW where it merges into the ground. The platform may be a result of land reclamation stopping short of the barrow. Rath (RO016-055----) is c. 60m to the N. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 24 August 2010
Mound barrow, likely dating to the Early Bronze Age. Its central position within a subrectangular platform suggests ritual or ceremonial significance, typical of funerary monuments in this period.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
