Knockroe castle vanished from a low knoll above Canbo Lough, leaving only a levelled grass platform and faint foundations beside a shrunken lake. John Crofton owned the place in 1586, tradition connects it to the Plunkett family, and Owen Mac Conor Og of Aghacarra had a handsome dwelling house there in 1635. The builders, tenants or victims are no longer certain, but the flat green oval still marks the point where a local power stood before the land took it back.

Knockroe was owned by John Crofton in 1586, but this location is traditionally associated with the Plunkett family (OS Name Books). Owen Mac Conor Og of Aghacarra had 'a handsome dwelling house' at Knockroe in 1635 which was probably at this location (Mac Dermot 1996, 359). Situated on a low knoll overlooking the W end of the S shore Canbo Lough (dims c. 1.3m E-W; c. 100-300m N-S) c. 40m distant, which has shrunk into a W and E lake. The knoll has been levelled to a grass-covered platform (dims 21.5m N-S; 20.3m E-W), which could have supported the castle of which there is no visible surface remains. To the NE are grass-covered foundations (Wth 1.1m) of a small rectangular house (RO010-085002-) (int. dims 4.8m E-W; 4m N-S), and to the ESE a short length (1.5m) of a wall foundation remains.
