Barmeath Castle stands in County Louth as a exuberant, crenellated country house built around 1770 on the ruins of a medieval castle, home to the Bellew family since the twelfth century. Thomas Smith remodelled and enlarged the façade in 1839, adding round towers, machicolations and a portcullis entrance that still dominate the drive. The surviving earlier fabric, preserved interior, ornamental river designed by Thomas Wright, outbuildings and paired gate lodges make it one of Louth’s most outstanding architectural heritages.
