Ballyhooly Lodge

Detached L-plan two-storey house and public house, built c. 1930, with four-bay elevations to north and east sides, lean-to addition to south side and recent mansard-roofed addition to west. Full-height box bays flanking entrance in east elevation, chamfered recessed north-east corner, recent two-storey addition to rear prolonging north elevation, and single-storey flat roofed additions to rear. Hipped artificial slate roof with rendered chimneystacks having moulded caps and cast-iron rainwater goods. Smooth rendered walls with string course to north elevation and corner bay, moulded render panels over entrances to east elevation, that over main entrance being pedimented, and moulded roundel to pediment over chamfered corner bay. Square-headed window openings having one-over-one pane single and double timber sliding sash windows to north elevation and southmost bay of east elevation, one with stained glass, and replacement timber casement windows to rest of east elevation, having stained-glass toplights. Four-over-four pane timber sliding sash windows to rear. Round-headed door opening to main entrance, set into slight projection having moulded cornice, double-leaf timber panelled door and fanlight. Round-headed door opening to chamfered corner, with moulded render cornice supported on consoles and having timber panelled door, fanlight and steps. Square-headed door opening to south end of east elevation, with timber panelled double-leaf door and paned overlight.

This building is notable as one of the few purpose-built early twentieth-century public houses in the region. Its L-plan takes advantage of the strategic junction south of a major river crossing. Its formal façade and structure survive intact and the chamfered corner entrance is unusual and adds interest to the building. The building presents a handsome focal point on this busy junction.
