Ballyhiernan is the sort of beach that makes a map look shy. One neat mark for sand cannot quite explain three bays, two points and a north-facing Atlantic that apparently never learned to speak quietly. I came to Fanad expecting a stroll; the shore promptly turned it into a small expedition with a different view at every bend. This is Ballyhiernan near Fanad, not a beach with a similar name elsewhere in Ireland. Donegal's visitor guide places Rinboy Point to the west and Rinmore Point to the east, with Carrickachurdin, Kinlackagh and Trabane among its three bays. That geography matters when you walk: the shore changes shape underfoot, and the next curve can conceal the way back. Pick a modest turning point if the weather is turning. Nothing says a good visit has to include every bay before lunch. The Atlantic wash reaches this north-facing coast with force, giving the place its sound and its sense of space. The same waves mean a beach walk and a swim are very different plans. Watch the tide, the shore and any signs rather than deciding from a photograph that the water is gentle. I briefly tried to appoint Rinboy Point as captain of the three bays; Rinmore Point raised a perfectly reasonable objection, so I left the command to the sea. Its authority is hard to miss from the sand. Donegal's official visitor listing gives Ballyhiernan a Green Coast award for 2026. That recognises the bathing water and the relatively unspoilt character of a rural shore; it does not guarantee safe swimming or a lifeguard on your visit. The public bathing-water service carries current quality reports and warnings. These are worth reading before entering the water, especially after heavy rain. On a walking visit, the dunes and shore wildlife deserve the same care: keep to established approaches, avoid trampling plants and bring every bit of rubbish away. Ballyhiernan is open for public beach visits, with free entry. Rural services are limited, so take water, warm clothes and a way to navigate back without relying on a phone signal. In October, assume summer supervision has ended unless a current sign tells you otherwise. Keep an eye on the turn of the tide if you follow the curves, and give exposed rocks and slippery ground room. If the wind rises, stand above the high-water edge and listen rather than trying to outwalk it. The neighbouring points show how broken this coast is, and that is precisely why a single photograph sells the place short. The prize is not a box ticked on a Donegal tour; it is time to see a complicated coastline unfold at walking pace. Let each bay have its own moment before heading back.
