Ballinlonty holds a castle so ghostly it resists even memory, for no wall or stone has ever surrendered itself to view. The upland air keeps the shape private while people repeat the warning that an old castle once stood there. The land may be guarding a room nobody has entered, waiting for someone patient enough to stop digging and listen.

Situated on high ground in an upland area. The precise location of this castle within the townland of Ballinlonty has not been identified. No visible remains of the castle in the vicinity of Ballinlonty House. In 1840 the OS Letters as recorded the following 'It is said there was an old castle in Ballinlonty' (O'Flanagan 1930, vol. 2, 192). The ruins of nineteenth-century Ballinlonty House are depicted on latest ed. OS 6-inch map. There is no evidence of a medieval castle or any fabric from a medieval building in the vicinity of Ballinlonty House.
