Ardtully Old Bridge in Lounaghan carries Richard Orpen’s announcement that he paid for it himself. Most men wait until the second drink to mention what they spent. Richard had it carved in stone so the river couldn’t change the subject.
Single-arch rubble stone road bridge over river, dated 1786. Rubble parapet walls with stone-on-edge coping and engraved plaque. Cut-stone plaque inscribed: "This bridge was built by Richard Orpen Esq. at his own expense in the year 1786". Gateway, built c. 1850, to south comprising pair of limestone ashlar piers with wrought-iron gates.
