In August 1261, Fínghin Mac Carthaigh and his Desmonians shattered a large Norman army near Kilgarvan, killing John FitzGerald, fifteen knights, and eight barons. The victory stood for a brief moment before the Normans killed Fínghin, forcing his brother to take the Desmond kingship.
