Shanagarry Castle stood on the north side of the Roughty River valley until quarrying removed it completely. By 1841 only one wall and faint foundations remained, and by 1846 the castle had vanished from the land itself. The valley keeps no stone marker, only the shape of the place where the castle disappeared.

In pasture, on the N side of the valley of the Roughty River. The castle has been removed by quarrying. It was named 'site of Shanagarry Castle' on the 1846 OS 6-inch map. In the 1840s it was recorded as the 'ruin of an old castle almost erased' (OSNB, Kenmare no. 4, 2). 'Shangarry' was described in 1841 as having its foundations only barely traceable and only one wall remaining with evidence of grouting (OSL, 183). Lewis (1837, vol. 2, 38) noted that 'the foundation is only now visible'. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Kerry. Shanagarry Castle was likely built by the McCarthy family, a prominent Gaelic Irish clan in the region, during the late medieval period, possibly in the 15th or 16th century. It is remembered as an example of a defended manor house associated with the historical landscape of west Cork and the broader Gaelic lordship of Carbery.

This remains an important historical record, but the official description says the monument is no longer visible or has been destroyed. The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
