Young Ireland rebellion

Young Ireland rebels clashed with British police at Ballingarry on 29 July 1848, marking the only armed uprising of the 1848 European revolution wave in Ireland. Thomas Meagher, William Smith O'Brien and Michael Doheny led roughly two thousand poorly armed men against a small constabulary force before reinforcements crushed the revolt. The fight raged through Farranrory for hours, killing two rebels and exposing how fragile Irish nationalist hope remained under British rule.
