Youghals House

Detached three-bay two-storey house, built c.1820, having canted end-bay addition to front (north-east). Three-bay two-storey lean-to addition to rear (south-west) with recent single-storey lean-to extension. Renovated wing to side (north-west). Pitched slate roof continuing as cat-slide to lean-to, having rendered chimneystacks, eaves course and uPVC rainwater goods. Hipped slate roof to canted end-bay, having rendered eaves course. Lined-and-ruled rendered wall to front elevation, rendered walls elsewhere. Moulded render sill courses and stop chamfered corners to canted bay having reeded torus surrounds. Square-headed window openings with limestone sills throughout having replacement uPVC casement a sliding sash windows. Replacement six-over-six pane timber sliding sash windows to rear elevation. Round-headed window opening with limestone sill to rear elevation, having margined multiple-pane window. Pedimented render doorcase to front elevation, having tooled limestone stepped approach. Panelled pilasters surmounted by brackets and open bed pediment. Round-headed door opening with timber panelled reveals and timber panelled door surmounted by spider-web fanlight. Square-headed door opening to rear with replacement double-leaf glazed timber doors. Channelled rendered enclosing wall with square-profile gate piers and double-leaf cast-iron gates.

Set overlooking Clonakilty harbour, a short distance from the town, this fine house was probably built by a prosperous person in the early nineteenth century. A Francis Noonan, solicitor, is listed as the occupier in Guy's Directory of 1875. The late nineteenth century canted bay is a fine addition and the house was probably also renovated at that time. The imposing doorcase is noteworthy and provides a decorative focus and sense of grandeur to the entrance front.
