William Wellesley-Pole, 3rd Earl of Mornington, was born as William Wesley at Dangan Castle, near Trim in County Meath, on 20 May 1763. He was the second son of Garret, 1st Earl of Mornington, and the elder brother of Arthur, who became Duke of Wellington. In 1781 he inherited estates from his godfather William Pole and changed his surname to Wesley-Pole, later updating the spelling to Wellesley-Pole in 1789.
