White Chapel (in ruins)

The following description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Carlow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 National Monument No. 393. Small, rectangular eighth or ninth-century single cell church (2.7m x 3.7m) with antae. Of large, well-finished granite boulders. Entrance with restored jambs in W gable. One round-headed window in E gable, with splayed rounded rear arch. Only lower courses of S and W walls preserved. Granite font with rectangular basin with central outlet, single basin bullaun stone. Holy well (CW019-049001-) 100m to E. (JRSAI 1943, 98-100) Preservation Order no. 73/1939. This monument is subject to a preservation order made under the National Monuments Acts 1930 to 2014 (PO no. 73/1939). It was subsequently taken into Guardianship on the 24/07/1940.
