Freestanding cast-iron water hydrant, c. 1910, with fluted cylindrical shaft, fluted domed cap with acorn finial. Makers mark in relief to base and shaft.
Hydrant displays artistic detail in functional design, with classically inspired base and fluted shaft. Illustrates the high standards of industrial design in cast iron prevalent in the early twentieth century. Hydrants played both an important functional and social role, providing a public water source before universal mains supply.
