The incised inscription has a Latin introduction and commemorates Anthony Colclough from Wolstanton, Staffordshire, who acquired the Tintern estate in the 1560s and died in 1584. He had seven sons, and the marriages of four of his five daughters are recorded on the stone. The inscription has been transcribed from the Latin and English by Hore (1858-9, 457; FitzGerald 1904-06m 168-9) as: IN OBITVM EGREGII VIRI ANTHONII COLCLOVGH MILITIS / PRISTINA SVBLIME PROAVORVM STEMATE DVTA / ET SEREES MAGNIS ORTA AB IMAGINTIBUS / ATQVE SVPERBA MANVS VARRIIS ORNATA TROPHEIS / HAEC SORTIS FRAGILI SOLA PARANTVR OPE / AST SINCERVS AMOR PATRIAE VOX CONSONA VVLGI / ET VERVS VERO CANDOR HONORE NITENS / NESCIA VEL DVRIS FLECTI CONSTANTIA REBVS / NON ALIENA SED HAEC NOSTRA VOCARE LICET / VTRVM PLVRA DARET SORS ET NATVRA VICISSIM / CERTARVNT VNO HAEC CVNCTA VIATOR HABES Here lieth the body of Sir Anthony Colclovghe knight eldest svne of / Richard Colclovghe of Wolstanton in Stafordshire Esqvire who came / First into this land the 34 yeer of Henry the 8 and then was Captayn / Of the Penshioners in which place and others of greater charg he continvd / A most faythfvl serviter dvring the life of Edward the VI and Qveen Mary / and vntil the XXVI yer of ovr most noble qven Elizabeth and then died the IX of December / 1594 He left by his wife Cleare Agare dowgther of Thomas Agare Esqvire 7 sonns / Frances, Ratclife, Anthony, Syr Thonas Colclovgh knight, John, Mathew, Lenard, and 5 / Doghters, Ianet who married to Nichlas Walshe, Esqvre of the Privie Covsayle and / on of the ivstise of the Kings Bench in Ireland.
