Triple-arch rubble limestone bridge, built c.1790, carrying road over Knappagh Water River. Pointed segmental arches with roughly dressed voussoirs, pointed rubble stone cutwaters to both faces. Rubble stone to soffits with cement rendered plinth. Rock-faced rusticated coping stones to rubble stone parapet walls, some replaced with render copings. Abutment walls battered to base to west (upstream) elevation.
Situated on a bend in the road, this bridge is a pleasing feature in the landscape, with the long low elevation and local stone integrating it into the landscape. The right angle the road takes in order to cross at this point is characteristic of early bridges, indicating the site was built before the advent of skewed arch bridge engineering. The rock-faced copings demonstrate skilled stone-cutting and stone masonry, and provide textural contrast to the rubble stone of the walls. It provides a subtle marker of the boundary between Counties Monaghan and Cavan.
