St Joseph's CemeteryChurch/chapel · 243 ydExplorer Tom St Joseph's Cemetery in Spittal-Lands is keeping secrets with its red brick and grey limestone mix. Fr Theobald Mathew is buried there, which is a bit spooky. Keep your eyes peeled for those fancy cresting details.
Explorer Tom Church of the Assumption Roman Catholic Church in Killeenreendowney is showing off its red brick swagger. Built in 1953, it’s part of that Rosary thing, but I bet the tower is just showing off. Take a pic for me!
post box508 ydExplorer Tom Post box in Cork City on Congress Road is a wall-mounted cast-iron beauty from around 1925 that’s seen more letters than my ex has seen therapy. It’s got that Free State design detail that’s actually quite charming. Don’t ignore it! Take a quick photo for me!
PaduaHouse · 698 ydExplorer Tom Padua in Cork City is on a corner with a chamfered edge, built around 1920. The ground floor is vacant retail, but the sash windows are still original. It’s got decorative render that makes it pop. Check out that hip and pitch roof combo!
Christ the King Secondary SchoolSchool · 704 ydExplorer Tom Christ the King Secondary School is jealous of the convent next door because it gets all the pretty flowers. There’s a rivalry with a more famous place that goes back centuries. Bring your best face for detention if you get caught in there.
Christ the King Presentation ConventConvent/nunnery · 727 ydExplorer Tom Christ the King Presentation Convent in Cork City has a statue staring at you from its porch. Built around 1935, it’s part of a religious complex. The nuns might be gone, but the Doric columns are still standing guard on Evergreen Road.
Explorer Tom Christ the King Roman Catholic Church in Cork City was designed by an American guy named F. Barry Byrne. He wasn’t Irish, which made some people twitchy. The dance held there probably went too far because the acoustics are amazing. Just don’t tell the priest about the disco.
Explorer Tom Burial ground in Cork City is so quiet the rabbits probably think it’s a nature reserve for very polite ghosts to sunbathe in. The wind blows through there with such drama that you can hear the whole history without reading a word. Stand still and listen, the wind tells it better than me.
Explorer Tom There’s actually a dog in charge of this George Boole bust now, and he barks at anyone who gets his maths wrong. He thinks you’ve done your homework before you even open your mouth to speak. Walk past slowly like you're in a film.
Explorer Tom The Glucksman Gallery has 'Yesterday' as its favourite song because it thinks everything modern is just noise and bad paint choices anyway. It’s sitting there quietly judging your outfit while you pretend to understand the abstract art on the walls. Tell the kids it's a castle. Close enough.
Explorer Tom Father Matthew is a monument to a man who probably had a ghost that was too lazy to haunt it because the paperwork was too complicated and annoying. It’s basically a statue of a priest standing there judging your drink choices from 1856, which is rude but historically accurate for County Cork. Bring sandwiches, the gulls will thank you.
Explorer Tom Lavitts Quay is a memorial where, legend has it, a goat once ruled the harbour by eating all the navigation charts before the tide came in. Now it’s just rocks and stories, but if you look closely, you can still see the hoofprints of that terrible beast. Bring your worst joke, the place has heard worse.
