Tobermannan Bridge

Triple-arch stone bridge, built c.1820, carrying road north-south over River Lagan, on border of counties Monaghan and Meath. Segmental arches, dry arch to north being smaller and infilled with random rubble stone. Ashlar voussoirs, cut-stone piers, cut-stone V-cutwaters to upstream (west) elevation. Rubble stone walls and soffits, rubble stone parapet walls, splayed at road junction to south, with dressed stone copings. Dressed stone retaining wall forming north river bank.

This stone bridge has an unusual vertical emphasis. The height of the piers, and the embankment of the river on one side are notable features. The rubble stone walls provide a pleasing textural contrast to the finely-crafted voussoirs and cutwaters. It serves as vital infrastructure to the local area, while its distinctive character makes it an attractive feature, visible at the road junction.
