Toberkilvroon

Holy well

What is recorded here

Toberkilvroon is a stone-lined holy well in County Cork, Ireland, now reduced to domestic water while its sacred name fades from local memory. It sits beside the Kilvroon burial ground, suggesting a forgotten connection between the living and the dead. The stones still hold shape even though the prayer has left them.
Stone-lined well, now used for domestic purposes. No 'holy' tradition surviving. Well possibly associated with Kilvroon burial ground (CO153-013002-) immediately to N. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
