The Rectory

Detached L-plan two-bay two-storey with dormer attic former rectory, built c.1860, two-bay two-storey return with two-storey extension (c.1920) to side (north). Single-storey porch to front (west), canted bay window to side (south). Now in use as private house. Pitched slate roofs having rendered eaves courses, roughcast rendered chimneystacks, cast-iron rainwater goods and timber bargeboards. Decorative carved timber bargeboards to porch. Hipped slate roof to canted bay having moulded rendered cornice and moulded string course to eaves. Flat roof to side (north) extension of return. Roughcast rendered walls throughout having recessed rendered plinth band to rear (east) elevation. Camber-headed window openings with rendered stone sills to front, rear and side (south) elevations of main block and to rear elevation of return, having rendered reveals and six-over-six pane timber sliding sash windows. Twelve-over-twelve pane timber sliding sash window to staircase and two-over-two vertical pane timber sliding sash window to side (north) elevation of main block. Square-headed window openings, with rendered stone and concrete sills to front and rear elevations of main block, to canted bay and to side (north) extension of return. Rendered reveals, two-over-two and four-over-four pane timber sliding sash windows with timber mullions to canted bay. Fixed timber-framed nine-pane windows to porch, replacement timber casement windows to first floor of side (north) extension and ground floor to rear (east) elevation of return. Square-headed door openings with rendered reveals throughout. limestone threshold and step to side (north) elevation of porch with replacement glazed timber door. Glazed timber door with overlight to front (north) elevation of side (east) extension. Pointed arch door opening to interior of porch to front elevation of main block, having rendered reveals and timber battened door. Building set back from road with driveway to south-west having recent gate on roughcast cement rendered pier. Garden with mature trees and shrubs to west and south of site having orchard to east. Concrete courtyard to north with single-storey pitched slate roofed outbuilding to north. Courtyard enclosed to west and east by rubble stone boundary wall, having recent corrugated-sheet double-leaf gates to west on rubble stone piers .

A fine house whose interesting form and elevations differentiate it from the more classically inspired rectories that were built in the first part of the nineteenth century. The canted bays and irregular fenestration add to its complexity and character, while patina is created by the retention of original sash windows, including a prominent stairwell window, timber battened door and slate roofs.
