What is recorded here
Detached three-bay single-storey gate lodge, extant 1840, on a rectangular plan. Refenestrated, ----. Now disused. Hipped slate roof with pressed or rolled lead ridges centred on rendered chimney stack having red brick corbelled stepped capping supporting terracotta octagonal pots, and cast-iron rainwater goods on slightly overhanging slate flagged eaves retaining cast-iron downpipes. Rendered, ruled and lined walls. Square-headed central door opening with threshold, and concealed dressings with hood moulding framing replacement timber panelled double doors. Square-headed flanking window openings with cut-granite sills, and concealed dressings with hood mouldings framing replacement uPVC casement windows. Set back from line of street at entrance to grounds of Summerhill House.
A gate lodge contributing positively to the group and setting values of the Summerhill House estate with the architectural value of the composition suggested by such attributes as the compact rectilinear plan form centred on a restrained doorcase; and the slightly oversailing roofline. Having been reasonably well maintained, the elementary form and massing survive intact together with substantial quantities of the original fabric: however, the introduction of replacement fittings to the openings has not had a beneficial impact on the external expression or integrity of a gate lodge forming part of a self-contained group alongside and adjacent gateway (see 15604020) with the resulting ensemble making a pleasing visual statement in a sylvan street scene.
