St. Margarets Well

Marked on the 1839 and 1941 eds of the OS 6-inch map and described in gothic lettering as St. Margaret’s Well on both. It is located on a shelf of a NE-facing slope overlooking Wexford town. It is not visible at ground level in an open area in the College Green housing estate other than as a manhole. There is no record of veneration. St. Margaret’s Well is associated with St. Margaret of Antioch, a Christian martyr venerated in medieval Britain and Ireland, often linked to healing and protection from sudden death. Traditionally, holy wells dedicated to her were visited for cures related to childbirth and women's health, with rituals often involving the immersion of effigies or offerings.
