What is recorded here

A finely carved head reputedly that of a local man called 'Stoney Brennan'. Below the head is a plaque bearing the legend 'Stoney Brennan / In sweet rememberance / of his curative powers / to his many friends / in old Loughrea.' On a modern explanatory plaque the following is recorded: 'In the mid-nineteenth century, Stephen (Stoney) Brennan was hanged in Loughrea, reputedly for stealing a turnip.' The head was re-erected in its present location in 2013.

Explorer Tom E. Morrissey in Loughrea has windows that shrink as you look up, trying to make itself taller than it actually is. It would teach history by lying about its height. Take a breath of fresh air outside.

Explorer Tom Gaol in Cuscarrick is where the inmates had better snacks than the guards, allegedly. Rumour has it they threw parties behind the bars. Best seen with a hangover and a sausage roll.

Loughrea CourthouseCourt house · 146 yd

Explorer Tom Loughrea Courthouse has strict rules for visitors: don’t touch the limestone, don’t look too hard at the windows, and definitely don’t ask about the bench mark. It’s sitting on the fair green looking very official. Bring wellies and low expectations.

Explorer Tom Mill race in Cuscarrick is pretending to be dry, but I know it’s just having a nap. Some local swears he invented water flow himself, which is bold for a man who can’t find a tap. Perfect detour when you need a splash of nonsense.

Explorer Tom Barrack Island is so tiny it fits in your pocket, or at least in a puddle. It's basically a pebble with delusions of grandeur. Stand where the owner stood and practise looking smug despite the water.

Explorer Tom Raruddy Castle in Galway is a mystery wrapped in a bush. I bet after three pints, it’d spill every dark secret of the county. Have a look and decide if I was lying about the ghosts.
