Stone Circles

Marked only on the 1940 ed. of the OS 6-inch map and located in woodland established before 1839 (OS 6-inch map) on a steep N-facing slope down from the site of Greenmount House and overlooking the NE-SW River Slaney, which is c. 100m to the NW. It is on a terrace just on the N side of the more northerly of two E-W forest lanes c. 120m from its W end. This is an oval enclosure (int. dims. c. 7m E-W; 4m N-S) defined by an earth and stone bank (Wth c. 1m; H c. 0.4m) and boulders (dims. c. 0.5m x 0.5m; H c. 0.6m). It is one of at least six enclosures and it may be part of an ornamental landscape.
