Vinegar Hill in County Wexford became the crushing end of the 1798 rebellion when Gerard Lake's thirteen thousand troops struck Anthony Perry's sixteen thousand pikemen on 21 June. Artillery and shrapnel drove the rebels down the hill while desperate charges broke against government lines, yet a slow advance by Needham's column left a western gap that thousands escaped through before grapeshot hammered the road. The battle ended major United Irishmen control in Wexford, but it also exposed the fatal weakness of enclosing a camp full of women, children and untrained fighters with no clean exit.
