Stone Circle

In rough pasture, in an area of undulating moorland c. 1km S of the Roughty River. Indicated on the 1846 OS 6-inch map as an arc of stones (C c. 30m) SSE-N, abutting a NW-SE field boundary. Nine radially set stones (max. L 0.6m; H c. 0.5m) mark the edge of a cairn (diam. 7m; H 1m). The surface of the cairn is largely exposed and consists of stones up to 1.5m in maximum dimensions. Four stones towards the middle of the cairn suggest the possibility of an inner ring. An accompanying standing stone (KE093-025003-) is c. 3m to the N. A five-stone circle (KE093-087----) lies c. 200m to the NNE. (Ó Nualláin 1984b, 77-8) The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Kerry. A Neolithic stone circle, dating to the third millennium BCE. Its alignment and positioning suggest ritual or ceremonial significance, typical of Neolithic monuments in the British Isles.
