What is recorded here
Standing stone in Tonavane, County Kerry, Ireland, is no longer standing. The sea took the irregular sandstone in the late 1960s, pulling from the land what people had marked, measured or remembered there. Tonavane keeps the loss instead of the stone, carrying a shape that can no longer be touched.
'A standing stone is recorded at this general location in the local parish history (In the Shadow of Sliabh Mis, 2001, 11). A photograph shows the stone to be of irregular shape, while it is described as having been of sandstone and approximately 1.5m in height (local information). The stone was extant up until the late 1960's at which time it was washed away by the sea.'

Likely dating to the Bronze Age, the standing stone in Tonavane may have served a ceremonial or territorial function. No specific folklore or inscriptions are recorded, though such stones are often associated with ancient ritual practices or waymarking in the landscape.
