Standing stone in Kiltullagh

At the summit of Kiltullagh Hill with a modern quarry c. 30m to the S in Co. Mayo where human remains dating to 3rd to 6th century AD were found in 1991 (Cribin et al. 1994). This is a rectangular stone (dims 0.7m x 0.2m; H 1.2m) aligned ENE-WSW with three holes (dims 0.04-0.06m; D 0.04-0.05m) in its W edge. Excavation (94E0030) around its base (McCormick 1994) revealed a fourth hole on its W edge together with a male inhumation and pieces of a cremation burial (RO032-001004-). Further excavation (96E0179) recovered more inhumations and a cremation were found in the vicinity (Robinson and Coombs 2000, 179). Ring-barrow (RO032-001002-) is c. 5m to the NE, but a second ring-barrow (RO032-001003-) (Knox 1914a, 45-6, Ring No. 1), whose position is uncertain lay to the W, and is probably in Co. Mayo. Probably dating to the early medieval period (3rd–6th century AD), this standing stone may be associated with the human remains found nearby, suggesting a possible funerary or ritual function. Its small size and location on a hilltop could indicate a marker for a burial site or territorial boundary.
