What is recorded here
Kilroe holds two dallans twenty yards apart, one beside a fulacht fia where hot stones may have thrown water into steam. The larger stone lies half buried in pasture, its girth still measuring nearly two metres across a gentle western slope. People may have gathered there to cook, mark a boundary or watch the sky tilt over the moor. Whatever they intended, the stone kept its shape while the names and hands above it disappeared.
In pasture, on a gentle W-facing slope. This possible standing stone (0.8m x 0.6m; H 0.65m) is orientated E-W and is one of two 'dallans' (see CO032-167----) recorded by Bowman (2000, 14) in 'Mrs. O'Brien's' in Kilroe, being '25 yards [20m] apart. Orientation, N.E. and S.W.' Bowman (ibid.) describes this standing stone as '(b) 2'10" [0.86m] by 6'7" [2m] in girth.' A fulacht fia (CO032-166----) lies c. 24m to the W.
The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 5' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009).

Likely dating to the Bronze Age, this standing stone may have had a ritual or commemorative function, as suggested by its orientation and classification as a 'dallan', a term sometimes associated with early Christian or prehistoric monuments. Local tradition and folklore may have linked it to ancestral memory or territorial markers, though specific meanings are not recorded.
The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
