Standing stone in Ballymaquirk

Standing stone

What is recorded here

Bogart Athon stands alone at the top of a steep hill, facing the sea. The cliff below has lost half its width since people stopped climbing to it, but the stone still points at the horizon like a finger refusing to drop. It is not the largest monument in Ireland, yet it is one of the clearest. A thin line of rock, a sharp edge of land, and an open sky. The coast changed around it. The intention did not.
One of two standing stones (9905) recorded by Bowman (1934, 340) on James O'Connell's land. Removed c. 1894. Exact location not known. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
