What is recorded here

Ballybane holds two stones forty-nine yards apart, one barely two feet high but broad enough to measure eighteen feet around its base. They still stand in County Cork, separated by a distance a person could walk in under a minute, yet close enough to belong together. Their exact position has blurred, but the gap between them remains clear in the old description. Whatever they marked has vanished; the stones still keep the shape of that forgotten purpose.

One of two standing stones (9882) recorded by Bowman (1934, 390) in 'Mr Lynch's 49 yards apart, orientation...SE...2ft high, 18ft in girth at base'. Exact location not known. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000).
