St Patricks Well

Ó Danachair (1955, 217) recorded the following details about this holy well; "St Patrick's Well" on 1840 map. A small well, roughly lined with stone. Some trees and bushes grow around it. No devotions now, but formerly visited for the cure of coughs and colds. St Patrick's Day was a day of special devotion. Legends: The well moved when profaned. St Patrick blessed the well. A Protestant lady threw in some silver coins as an offering; an impious Catholic drained the well to get the money, which he spent on drink, but was struck dead as he left the tavern'. St Patrick's Well is traditionally associated with the patron saint of Ireland, St Patrick, and like many such wells, may have been a site of Christian pilgrimage and healing practices in the past. The well's name and early documentation suggest it was once a place of devotional significance, though such practices have since ceased.
