St. Laurences Stone

Situated on a fairly level landscape. This is a glacial erratic with a natural hole at its base on the S side, which is reputed to have been made by St. Laurence O’Toole’s hands. It had originally been at Rathmore castle (ME024-018001-) but it was moved to a corner of a field near the road (R164) from Athboy to Kells. St. Laurence O'Toole, a 12th-century Archbishop of Dublin and patron saint of the city, is associated with this site through local tradition that claims the natural hole in the stone was formed by his hands. The stone was originally located at Rathmore Castle, suggesting a historical or ecclesiastical connection to the area.
