St. Colemans Well

Marked on the 1839 and 1925 eds of the OS 6-inch map, and described in gothic lettering as St. Coleman’s Well on both. It is situated on a steep and overgrown W-facing slope, and c. 40m S of the site the church (WX035-049001-). It could not be identified in 1988. The well is named after one of the many saint Colemáns (Ó Riain 2011, 183-208). However, there is no record of veneration at the well. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 21 February, 2013

St. Coleman’s Well is associated with St. Coleman, a 7th-century Irish saint known for his monastic foundations in County Clare and Cork. The well, long used for healing and pilgrimage, was traditionally visited for cures related to eye ailments and general wellness, with rituals often involving the collection of water at dawn.
