White Castle stood on or near the present Whitecastle house, held by Brian age McLaughlin in 1601 and later by Major George Carey for Lord Chichester. The castle itself has vanished, leaving only possible fragments in a yard and a name preserved in a late 18th century house. What remains is a gap where a building should be, marked on old surveys but absent from the land, forcing imagination to supply what the eye cannot find.

White Castle (site of): Occupied in 1601 by Brian age McLaughlin, in 1654-6 it belonged to Major George Carey, tenant to Lord Chichester, who had been granted the whole of Inishowen at the time of the Plantation (Simmington 1937, 2; Davies and Swan 1939, 208). It was probably sited on or near the present Whitecastle, a late 18th century house (Rowan 1979, 477). The site is marked on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map. Apart from some possible fragments, in the yard, there is no visible trace of this castle. The above description was derived from the 'Archaeological Survey of County Donegal.
