Carrickmaquigley held a red castle on a boss of rock four and a half metres high, where Hugh Carrogh McLaughlin resisted English capture until 1608. Chichester took it, Hansard and Carey rented it, then time erased it. The rock remains, but the castle departed, leaving only the red memory and a boundary marked by absence.

Red Castle (site of): In 1601, this castle was inhabited by Hugh Carrogh McLaughlin and was captured by English forces in the 1608 rebellion. Granted to Chichester, it was let to Sir Richard Hansard and subsequently to Sir George Carey. The castle was probably a ruin by 1665 and had been entirely demolished more than a century and a half ago. It was sited on a boss of rock, c. 4.5m high. Hugh Carrogh McLaughlin held the Red Castle at Carrickmaquigley in 1601, and it was captured by English forces during the 1608 rebellion; its subsequent grant to Chichester and occupation by Sir Richard Hansard reflect the shifting control of Ulster during the post-Tyrone period. The site is remembered as part of the broader English colonization and pacification efforts in the early 17th century.
