Hacketstown Castle vanished beneath ordinary pasture, leaving no ruin for eyes to find. Philip Rowe owned the land in 1641, yet the Civil Survey of 1654-6 still listed a castle there, proving that ownership and memory could outlive stone. The plateau holds that absence beside the Ballymacart river valley, inviting imagination to build what silence removed.

Located in pasture on a plateau on the W side of the NNW-SSE Ballymacart river valley with the stream c. 230m to the E. A castle on land owned by Philip Rowe in 1641 is recorded in the Civil Survey of 1654-6 (Simington 1942, 57). It is not visible at ground level. Simington, R. C. (ed.) Philip Rowe owned the land with a castle at Hacketstown in 1641, as recorded in the Civil Survey of 1654–56. The site is historically significant as a documented landholding during the turbulent period of Confederate Ireland and Cromwellian conquest.
